Stay out of your head, it’s a bad neighborhood. Notice how discussions we have in our heads (with ourselves) are circular? They also can tend in the direction of worst case scenarios, at times with those thoughts accelerating. There exists a primary mechanism within us built for survival. The next time a piece of news crosses our path, one that threatens, or is perceived to threaten us -the mind does not distinguish between the two- just observe. Once activated, the mind takes off, enumerating the unceasing supply of, even remotely plausible, problems and conflicts. If these thoughts stayed in the mind that would be one thing, but soon our physical bodies and emotions get into the game. Setting sail to who knows where, we churn on all cylinders, all systems increasingly on the go. We experience this phenomena when we are not in the present moment. Outside of the present moment, we become automation machines, victims of our environment, and now, a twenty-four-hour news-alert cycle that does not help. We are individualistic in the flavor and color of our specific merry-go-rounds of concerns, but we share the mechanism. Self awareness on the individual level, the only place where it is possible, proper breathing and correct intent, provide key elements needed to stop the spinning and take conscious, purpose-driven actions for a better life and world. This we can do.
