In the matter of choosing a shortcut in life, or purposefully taking the long way, do not shy from the long way. It is this route that delivers for us. In a world that moves at the speed of light, we are growing increasingly unfamiliar with anything that does not. In business, politics, and society at large, we train for, and reward instant success. We place a high value on those who can move us ahead quickly, if accurately. Certainly, there is an important role for this approach and for its requisite talents. With human evolution, it is quite another story. In navigating the long way, we come to know our truest self, experience our earned strength, and uncover a sacred peace that lies at our core. This elusive calm, so energetically sought after by those who routinely prize shortcuts, is not in abundance there. While philosophers have written about this truth for centuries, amidst our daily struggles and routines, it remains elusive today. This cultivated willingness can always be revived, by taking just one aspect of life the long way. Maybe it is through raising our young children, or pursuing a single interest with detailed scrutiny. So long as we can experience taking the long way with at least one aspect of our lives, we will not lose touch with its relevance to our inner fulfillment, and to human evolution. Breathing is always the gateway to the long road. Find a quiet place, breathe, and slow things down. Another fork in the road is just around the corner.
