How we do one thing, is how we do every thing. This single insight, serves well those who are able to internalize and actuate its usefulness, into their daily lives. We all know someone who is (tediously) perfect, all the time. Conversely, another person’s life, is in perpetual chaos. For these obvious examples, one does not need a decoder ring. Let’s say, however, we meet someone for the first time. What tools do we have at the ready, to divine trustworthiness and understanding. Clues abound, our natural instincts, while subject to emotional color, recording even the smallest details. Does this person demonstrate the same level of respect for all people? Do they listen in ways that make us experience being heard? Are there inconsistencies in their story? Do they ignore things they perceive as too small to matter? These litmus tests for character apply to ourselves of course, demonstrating for others how we can be expected to behave going forward. It is not our tolerance for the risk of being caught in a lie that exposes our integrity. Rather, it is the character definition established when deciding that white lies are not lies at all. It is not the relative importance of a person, the effort required to complete a task, or the desirability of an object that determines worthiness of our best effort. It is our treatment choice, in all matters, that expresses who we are. Human beings are defined by how we see, and how we do, every one thing. Because, as it turns out, how we do one thing, is how we do every thing.
