“Live! Because when you die, you will wish you have lived.” Herman C. Rumpp 1858-1940 Archiving my paternal family history has yielded remarkable discoveries. This short quote was hand written on the inside page of my Great Grandfather’s address book. His life certainly demonstrated his commitment to this idea. We can only understand our lives in retrospect, especially living the pace of life in which we find ourselves in modern times. We do our best with each day we are given, the sum total of which creates our legacy, but we cannot always know which fork in the road is the best one. “When you reach a fork in the road, take it.” Yogi Berra. With each fork taken, each skill and perspective gained, our own history is created. In researching the lives of others, we have an example to follow, or not to follow. Though times change with ever increasing speed, to be human does not. We are faced with complexity, challenge and opportunity. How we approach these, how we handle these, how we think of these, that is what makes us unique. Observation is required to be witness to our lives. Stillness and breathing enable our most important skills. Those exclusive to humans, the possibility to change over the course of our lives. May you experience ongoing evolution throughout the days of your life. What a gift!
